An Easy Hike + Hidden Gem in Cape Town: Woodstock Cave Hiking Guide

Updated: Aug 4, 2025

Looking for a short but scenic hike in Cape Town? Let us introduce you to Woodstock Cave, a lesser-known, rewarding trail with panoramic views of the city and a peaceful cave tucked into the mountain. This is the only hiking guide you will need. You won’t even find this hike listed on popular apps like AllTrails! Prefer to watch? Check out our short reel here.

Discovering Woodstock Cave: A Hidden Gem in Cape Town

Where the Woodstock Cave Hike Starts

Your journey begins on Tafelberg Road, the same road used to access the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway. To find the trailhead:

  • Drive past the Table Mountain cable car entrance until the road is closed off by car barricades.

  • You’ll find free roadside parking just before the barricades.

  • It’s a popular trail with locals, so we recommend getting there before 8 AM, especially on winter mornings when the air is crisp and the light is perfect.

Hiking Guide: What to Expect on the Route

Once you’re parked, walk through the car barricades onto the unmaintained tar road. You’ll pass a few potholes and loose rocks, but it’s nothing too tricky or unsafe. Keep walking until you see a signboard for “Woodstock Cave.” It's clear and easy to spot. From there:

  • Take a slight right and follow the trail up.

  • After about 15 minutes, you’ll see another sign confirming the route, with arrows pointing toward Rhodes Memorial and Woodstock Cave.

  • Total hiking time is about 45 minutes one-way, with some time factored in for photo or water breaks.

The trail is not too steep or technical, although the final stretch toward the cave can be a bit slippery due to mountain stream runoff. Just make sure you’re wearing shoes with good grip, and you’ll be just fine.

The Reward: Stunning Views + Tranquil Vibes

Once you reach Woodstock Cave, take a moment to soak in the views. You’ll have a wide-angle look over Cape Town, the city bowl, harbour, and suburbs beyond. The cave itself is tucked away, cool, and shaded. It's a great spot to rest, snack, or enjoy a peaceful moment with nature.

This is one of Cape Town’s best bang-for-your-buck hikes: it's short, scenic, and surprisingly quiet given its central location.

Quick Tips for Your Hike

  • Parking: Free, but fills up fast — go early!

  • Duration: 45 mins up, 30–40 mins down

  • Difficulty: Easy to moderate

  • Best for: City views, peaceful cave moments, beginner-friendly hiking

  • Bring: Water, snacks, grippy shoes, and your camera

Why You’ll Love It

If you love hidden gems, low-effort high-reward hikes, or you're just short on time but craving nature, the Woodstock Cave trail ticks all the boxes. It's perfect for a quick morning mission and offers some of the best views in Cape Town — without the cable car queues or tourist traffic.
