Kayaking with Dolphins in Cape Town, South Africa

Updated: Jun 30

Yes, it’s as magical as it sounds. If you've ever wanted to see dolphins dancing alongside you while paddling on open water, this is your sign to try kayaking from the V&A Waterfront. It’s one of the most peaceful (and underrated) ways to explore Cape Town’s coastline. You can also watch our experience here.

The Experience

The kayaking in Cape Town tour starts near Oranjezicht Market. The guides are super friendly and make sure you’re geared up with life jackets and a short intro before you hit the water. No experience needed. It’s beginner-friendly, so that you can chill and paddle at your own pace.

The route takes you along the scenic coastline toward the Green Point lighthouse, with Table Mountain in the background and the ocean stretching ahead. It’s honestly chef’s kiss.

A Disclaimer

While dolphin sightings aren't guaranteed, they do pop up often, and when they do, it’s pure magic. We've seen them playing right next to us, jumping and swimming in pods. Even without them, the seascapes and city views are incredible, so bring your phone (ideally waterproof!) to snap some pics.

What to Pack & When to Go Kayaking in Cape Town

  • Sunscreen

  • Cap or hat (make sure it's tightly strapped, or prepare to donate them to the ocean)

  • Sunglasses

  • Comfortable, quick-dry clothing OR a change of clothes

  • Waterproof pouch or dry bag for your phone, although sometimes you will be provided one

☀️ We recommend going during summer, even though it's busier. You’ll have less wind and 'warmer' water, which makes paddling much easier and far more enjoyable.

Also, go in the morning if you can. The ocean tends to be calmer then.

Cost and Booking Info

The activity costs about $35/€30 per person, which we think is pretty reasonable for the views, dolphins (if you're lucky), and that "wow-I'm-in-Cape-Town" feeling.
