Stellenbosch is best known for its variety of wine farms and the range of tastings that are offered. However, there is so much more you can enjoy in Stellenbosch! It's the perfect weekend escape for non-drinkers as well, and here's why + things to do in Stellenbosch.

The Vibe

We love Stellenbosch because it is far enough from the city to feel secluded, but connected enough that you can still enjoy the town. Most of all, we LOVE how much you can walk. It is so refreshing to have zebra crossings everywhere and so many things within walking distance to wherever you are.

Stellenbosch is vibrant: no matter when you go, you will see loads of people walking from one place to another, enjoying meals at the various restaurants, or hopping into and out of stores. Oh, and most of the restaurants have the European style cafe setup, where tables sprawl onto the sidewalk. It's so cute.

Where to Stay

This one really depends on how long you're there; many people we've met prefer to stay within the main centre of the town, and there are tons of hotels you can stay at. We've always preferred AirBnBs when visiting Stellenbosch though, simply because of the comfort and cosiness it offers. We recently stayed at a really cute one about 10 minutes away from the town center. It was awesome because it was close enough to go to at a moments notice, but also far enough that the noise of Golden Week or weekend jols didn't bother us.

Things to do in Stellenbosch

Polkadraai
One of the most colourful stops in Stellenbosch, Polkadraai is famous for its bright photo spots and strawberry picking. Bring your camera and your sweet tooth, the strawberries are massive! We recommend checking out their strawberry season before heading there, and you can also go on a tractor ride! Plus, there are pony rides, mini golf, and loads of other activities for kids. If you're looking for a tractor ride for adults, this one comes with wine tasting.
Ceramics
Both The Pottery and Ceramic Cafe offer you a chance to get those creative juices flowing! You can paint your own ceramic masterpiece while sipping on coffee, and it's so much fun regardless of whether you’re an artist at heart or just there for fun. You’ll leave with something personal (and probably a little paint on your hands).
Root 44 Market
If you love good food, live music, and local craft stalls, Root 44 is a must. The vibe here is always buzzing, and you’ll want to come hungry because there’s so much to try. You'll also find fresh produce and art dealers amongst the variety of vendors.
Cycle
Stellenbosch is gorgeous to cycle through. Rent a bike and pedal past historic buildings, leafy streets, and of course, wine estates. Alternatively, you can also do this e-bike tour, or this historical one.
Rupert Museum
This hidden gem is perfect for art lovers. It’s a peaceful space with fascinating collections, and best of all, it’s free to visit. If you go on a Saturday, Rupert Museum is likely to have additional activities you can partake in too (like spot the difference or vote for your favourite art piece).
Botanical Gardens
The Stellenbosch Botanical Gardens are a quiet escape right in the middle of town. For a small fee, you can stroll through unique plant collections and enjoy the abundant greenery. Plus, you can grab a coffee at their café afterwards. If you're around on a Saturday, there is a market that takes place here as well.

Dylan Lewis Sculpture Gardens

As noted on his website, Dylan Lewis is widely recognised as one of the world’s foremost sculptors of the animal form, and in recent years, he has used the human figure to explore our relationship with our inner wilderness. These gardens are a breathtaking blend of nature and art. You’ll wander through indigenous gardens dotted with impressive sculptures, with the mountains as your backdrop. It's both gorgeous and thought provoking.

Winelands Light Railway Park
The Winelands Light Railway offers a seven minute train ride that's great for kids (and adults who are kids at heart). Climb aboard these mini trains for a fun ride through the Winelands! You can enjoy a picnic on the greens after that too.
Museums or Walking Tour
From the Stellenbosch Village Museum to historical galleries, this town’s history is worth exploring. Our favourite thing to do is probably go to the Toy and Miniature Museum and for a R5 coin, watch a miniature train set come to life. It's so exciting! Alternatively, you can do a guided walking tour.
Segway Tour
Glide through vineyards and get some behind-the-scenes views of wine farms in the most fun way possible - on a segway! This is always a super fun way to explore a farm, and it has a quick learning curve. You can book here.
Chocolate Tasting
Because dessert is always a good idea. Local chocolatiers here take their craft seriously, and you’ll taste the difference. Waterford Estate offers a chocolate and wine pairing, although many places will substitute coffee for wine if you don't drink.
Hike
The surrounding mountains in the Jonkershoek Nature Reserve has trails for all fitness levels, and the views are the perfect reward. Our favourite is the waterfall hike, If you book here, you will get a guide to take you as well.
Animal Farm
The Vredenheim Park offers family-friendly fun. You can pet and feed farm animals, learn about local farming, and enjoy the fresh air. They've also got game drives and a big cats park, with daily guided feeding tours at 11:00 and 15:00. Alternatively, you could go see some cheetahs and giraffes with this experience.
Chili Oil Tasting
Yes, this is a thing! If you like a bit of spice, try Banhoek's chili oil tasting experience for something different (and delicious). It's free, but you will definitely want to sit in their gorgeous restaurant for a bit after.
Horse Riding
Swap four wheels for four legs and explore Stellenbosch’s scenic vineyards on horseback. Guided horse trails take you through rolling hills, and it's perfect for both first-timers and experienced riders. You can book this activity here.
Hot Air Balloon
See Stellenbosch from a whole new perspective, floating high above the Winelands at sunrise. Hot air balloon rides give you panoramic views of mountains, vineyards, and patchwork farmlands, and end with a celebratory drink. Although on the pricier side, it's a true bucket-list experience.

It’s one of those towns that you can visit over and over, and still discover something new each time: a hidden café, a quirky shop, a new trail, or a seasonal market you didn’t know about.

One of the things we love about Stellenbosch is that you can tailor your visit to match your pace. Pack your day with back-to-back activities, or simply relax at a sidewalk café and watch the world go by. Either way, you’ll leave feeling like you’ve had the perfect little escape from the city.
