Every once in a while you need that short hike with epic views, low difficulty, and that “I need this peace” energy. You’ve probably heard us rave about Kloof Corner before. Well, meet its slightly longer cousin: Elephant’s Eye.

How to Get There & Where to Start

Once you enter Silvermine Nature Reserve, drive down a bit until you reach the designated parking area near the dam. There are clear signposts all along the route, and honestly, it’s one of the most well-marked hikes we’ve done in Cape Town.

The Beginner Hike Cape Town

The trail to Elephant’s Eye is mostly flat, scenic, and super beginner-friendly. It took us around 48 minutes to reach the cave, and we only paused a few times, mostly to take in the views.

A scenic viewing point about halfway up gives you a stunning panoramic of Tokai, Constantia, and surrounding vineyards, plus a sneak peek of the cave (you’ll spot it as a big, dark hollow in the mountain).

Why is it called Elephant’s Eye? Legend has it that the cave forms part of the “elephant” shape you can spot in the mountain from afar. The cave = the eye. Cute, right?

At the Top

The last few minutes of the trail are a bit steeper, but nothing too hectic. Once you reach the cave, it’s cool, shady, and quiet. The perfect spot to rest, breathe, and maybe even set up a little picnic (like we did!). We just sat there and soaked it all in: the peace, the view, the silence… and a snack or two 😋

The Way Down

You can take a shorter route back (cuts off a few minutes), or loop around for a longer return. Either way, coming down is a breeze, and there are plenty of spots to stop and admire the wildflowers or just listen to the wind rustling through the fynbos.

Our Tips

• Bring a light jacket, the cave gets chilly

• Take water & snacks (picnic-ready if you want the full experience)

• Make sure to pay the R36 conservation fee at the gate (card or cash)

• Go earlier in the day for quieter paths & more shade

If you’re looking for a gentle, beautiful, and slightly off-the-radar hike in Cape Town, Elephant’s Eye delivers. It’s one of those hikes that makes you feel like you’ve done something amazing without needing three hours, hiking boots, or sore calves the next day.
